Hi, I'm Leah!

💼 Software & Hardware Engineer @ Zipline | 🎓 BASc Mechanical Engineering '23 @ UBC 📍 Located in San Francisco Bay Area, CA

I have always strived to help people and create solutions that make tasks easier as well as more efficient. My passion for problem-solving and aspirations led me to pursue an education in mechanical engineering with a biomedical subspecialization at the University of British Columbia. I am also currently self-learning various subjects including programming, machine learning and microcontrollers in order to integrate these aspects of software into mechanical design solutions and biotechnology.

EDUCATION

University of British Columbia

BASc in Mechanical Engineering - Biomedical Option
September 2019 → May 2023 Vancouver, BC 3.66 CGPA Completed: 5 Work Terms BAsc Mechanical Engineering Graduate with Distinction

Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Engineering First Year Certificate Program
September 2018 → May 2019 Richmond, BC 3.89 CGPA Certificate in Engineering with Distinction

WORK EXPERIENCE

Zipline

Software & Hardware Engineer - Ground Systems Team
June 2023 → Ongoing South San Francisco, California
Startup for world's largest autonomous delivery system, specializing in on-demand drone delivery and instant logistics

Zoox

(Acquired by Amazon)
Software & Mechanical Engineer Co-op (Body & Closures Team)
May 2022 → August 2022 Foster City, California
Startup for autonomous vehicles focusing on creating a purpose build vehicle to implement a self-driving ride-sharing service

→ Achieved a key safety requirement for Zoox's L5 vehicle by developing a closures object detection model which triggers retraction of doors if an object is hit while automatically opening or closing

→ Decreased tooling cost, removed user misuse case and met studio requirement by modeling new door casting features and forged brackets in CATIA to package hinges inside door frame

→ Eliminated cost of manufacturing entire door assemblies that characterize performance of new door actuators by designing a compact dynamometer that automates variable-load testing

BlackBerry

Embedded Systems Software Engineer Co-op
January 2022 → May 2022 Waterloo, Ontario
Large company which now focuses on radar devices and security software

→ Built out test harnesses for radar device's control modules and created robust unit tests for each function within each target module using the GoogleTest and Fake Function Framework

→ Produced a set of automation scripts to easily install, run and uninstall our parsing tool that acquires radar sensor data for easier consumer usage

→ Learned about best practices in terms of version control in a large code base, low-level system architecture in C/C++, embedded systems control, sensor integration and data parsing

3DQue Systems Inc

Machine Learning & Hardware Engineer Co-op
May 2021 → August 2021 Vancouver, British Columbia
Startup which has created a 3D printing automation system that can make stock 3D printers in to production machines. Product allows for any number of GCODE files to be queued up and printed continuously as printer autonomously pushes off finished parts and starts next print

→ Leaded development of a 3D printer monitoring system which detects a variety of common 3D printing failure modes by building temporal object detection models with TensorFlow and PyTorch

→ Automated mass data collection by programming multiple Python scripts that generate random print failure files, and creating Bash scripts to auto-upload GCODE to printers and to take time-lapses

→ Guided design of custom Pi Camera mount with adjustable arm to get optimal view of nozzle head

→ Co-hosted company's weekly live streams on YouTube and Twitch with founder

BIOFORM Technology

Mechanical Design Engineer Co-op
July 2020 → July 2021 Vancouver, British Columbia
Startup within e@UBC Hatch Accelerator Program which is developing a manufacturing platform that rapidly produces biodegradable alternatives to plastics

→ Responsible for designing and prototyping custom multi-layer nozzles, posttreatment and winding systems for production platform which will create stretch wrap and medical tubing for our pilot trial

→ Gained extensive design for manufacturability and assembly knowledge while working closely with senior engineering consultant when iterating through prototypes

Verdi Expeditions Inc.

Machine Learning & Mechanical Test Engineer Co-op
September 2020 → December 2020 Vancouver, British Columbia
Startup within e@UBC HATCH Accelerator Program which is developing a platform based around intelligent irrigation systems for efficient, climate-resilient agriculture

→ Worked on proprietary sensing unit to be used in new seed-round smart valves to sense flow/no-flow conditions through drip tube using a sensor and background neural network model

→ Designed, built and programmed an automated test jig to rigorously test solenoid valves to choose the best and most economic option to be used within each of the Verdi smart valves

entrepreneurship@UBC

Mechanical Engineer Co-op
July 2020 → December 2020 Vancouver, British Columbia
Simultaneously worked at two startups - BIOFORM Technology and Verdi Expeditions - within the e@UBC HATCH Accelerator Program where I designed and built mechanical systems while learning the nuances of entrepreneurship
